6.5 Grendel

6.5 Grendel

The 6.5 Grendel is quite possibly one of the more deceiving little cartridges on the market. It can easily be dismissed as diminutive and ineffectual at first glance. But upon a second review one might see a geometric similarity with cartridges like the 6mm PPC and 6mm B.R. Also one may dismiss that its intended design was focused directly on AR/MSR function. Secondly that it achieves its level of performance in the smaller AR-15 sized rifle, not the larger AR-10. Much can be said about how easily it might be overlooked, and equally as much about what a great cartridge and platform it proven itself to be in the hands of anyone who uses it.

Ballistics:

Bullet weights: 85 - 129 grains

Fast & Light: 100 grains @ 2,745 ft/sec = 1,672 Ft-lbs Energy

Optimal load: 123 grains @2,580 ft/sec = 1,818 Ft-lbs Energy

Comparative Loads:

223 Rem: 77 grains @ 2,790 ft/sec = 1,330 Ft-lbs Energy

6mm BR: 105 grains @ 2,800 ft/sec = 1,827 Ft-lbs Energy

250 Savage: 100 grains @ 2,820 ft/sec = 1,765 Ft-lbs Energy

6.5 Grendel: 123 grains @ 2,580 ft/sec = 1,818 Ft-lbs Energy

6.5 Carcano: 123 grains @ 2,690 ft/sec = 1,976 Ft-lbs Energy

6.8 SPC: 120 grains @ 2,460 ft/sec = 1,612 Ft-lbs Energy

7-30 Waters: 120 grains @ 2,700 ft/sec = 1,942 Ft-lbs Energy

When we look at the comparative loads and place the 6.5 Grendel in proper context, we might be rather surprised at the ballistic capabilities of the Grendel. Whether you are comparing it against the proven varminting capabilities of the 223 Remington or the deer slaying pedigree of the 6.5 Carcano & 7-30 waters, the 6.5 Grendel is quite impressive and I admit, possibly a little exciting. I look forward to your comments.
